98   LAWS OF ONTARIO

This Act provides that whenever a person is under arrest, or in custody, or an inmate of a gaol or reformatory, and there is any suspicion on the part of the local health officer that he is infected or has been exposed to infection from venereal disease, the local officer of health may cause such physical examination as may be necessary, and if infection is found, give such directions for the treatment of the patient, for his detention and isolation, and for such other prevention of infection from him as may be deemed proper. Where a medical officer of health of a municipality is credibly informed that a person resident in a municipality is infected and liable to infect other persons, notice in writing may be given to the suspected person requiring him to consult a legally qualified medical practitioner and to procure and produce within a specified time a certificate that the person notified is or is not suffering from venereal disease. In default of the production of the certificate the medical officer of health may compel an examination and is given power to direct the course of conduct to be pursued by any person found
