the father, which affords evidence of acknowledgment of paternity, or within one year after his return to Ontario where he is absent from the Province at the expiration of one year after the birth. The Provincial Officer is a necessary party to the proceedings. The application is heard in a summary way and the judge if he finds the person charged to be the father of the child may make an order requiring him to pay the reasonable expenses of the maintenance and care, medical or otherwise, of the mother during the three months next preceding the birth of the child and her confinement, and during such period after the birth as the judge may consider necessary, taking into consideration the circumstances of the case, and the report of the medical officer of health of the municipality. He may also order the payment of a weekly sum, or lump sum in lieu of weekly payments, and the payment of the expenses of burial of the mother in case of her death at or in consequence of the birth and the expenses of the burial of the child if it dies before the making of the affiliation order.
