PREFATORY NOTE.

This little handbook is not to be taken as a substitute for the volumes of the Ontario Statutes, nor is it designed for use as a legal textbook.

The receipt of numerous applications for information as to the laws of this Province upon various points which are of particular interest to women and children has led to the belief that some such work as the present one may prove of value to those interested in the various organizations engaged in promoting the improvement of social conditions, as well as to those who merely desire to have some general knowledge upon the subjects dealt with. Every good citizen should have a reasonable acquaintance with the laws of his country, an acquaintance sufficient to permit of intelligent discussion of the questions which are the subjects from time to time of action by the Legislature. It is not necessary to urge upon the reader the duty more particularly of acquiring some knowledge
