MEN OF CANADA.

ANTHONY FRANCIS FORBES,
Hamilton, Out., was born at
Annapolis, Nora Scotia. He
is the eldest son of the late Captain
A. V. S. Forbes. On retiring from
active service in the army, he was
appointed Sub-Collector of Imperial
Customs at Yarmouth, N. S. The
subject of our sketch commenced his
education ill England, and continued
it in this country. He was appointed
Sub-Collector at Shelburne, N.S., in
183S, and was subsequently- removed
to Annapolis, N. S., as Comptroller of
Customs and Navic ation Laws and
thence to Arichat, C.B., to fill a similar

position. On the transfer of the duties executed by Imperial Customs officers to the officers of the Colonial Custonis in 1855, he came to Hamilton, Out., where he has since resided, doing a large and growing business as stock broker and agent for iiilaiid and ocean marine and fire insurance companies. In religion he is an Episcopaliaii, and was a church warden of the Church of the Ascension in 1865 and iS66. In politics he is a Liberal-Conservative. Mr. Forbes was married in iS53, at Annapolis, N.S., to Laliah, eldest daughter of Mr. Justice Ritchie, and w1dow of Charles MacColla, barrister.
