MEN of CANADA.

SIR THOMAS GALT, Chief
Justice of Common Pleas of
Ontario, Toronto, was born on
the 1201 of August, 1Si5, in London,
Fang. Mr. Galt's education was com-
menced in Scotland, continued in Eng-
land until 1525, and completed in
Lower Canada. He returned to F;ng-
land in 1S30, and when in his eigh-
teenth year, emigrated and settled in
Toronto, where he entered the employ of
the Canada Company, remaining there
from 1553 until 1539. From September,
1539, until April, 1340, he was in the
office of the Commissioner of Crown
Lands. In 154o he was articled to

the late Chief Justice Draper. He was called to the Bar in iS45, and at once entered upon the practice of his profession. He was elected Bencher in 1555, created a O.C. in iS59, appointed a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1569, and Chief justice in 1557. His appointment was a most creditable one, as he has proven one of the most capable and esteemed judges known to Canadian Courts, sustaining this high honor «ith the ability and dignity appropriate to the position. Chief Justice Galt is a member of the Church of England. He was married October 27, 1547, to bliss Frances Louisa Perkins.
